چکیده

Abstract The growing family of two-dimensional crystals has been recognized as a promising platform for investigation rich low-dimension physics and production variety devices. Of particular interest are recently reported atomic sheets non-van der Waals materials, which reshape our understanding chemical bonds enable heterostructures with novel functionality. Here, we study the structural optical properties ultrathin InGaS 3 produced by standard mechanical cleavage. Our ab initio calculations reveal weak out-of-plane covalent bonds, responsible layered structure material. energy required isolation single layer is low ~50 meVÅ –2 , comparable conventional van material’s monolayer energies 20–60 . A comprehensive structural, vibrational, material reveals its wide bandgap (2.73 eV), high refractive index (>2.5) negligible losses in visible infrared spectral ranges. These make it perfect candidate visible-range all-dielectric nanophotonics.

Optical contrast and refractive index of natural van der Waals heterostructure nanosheets of franckeite

We study mechanically exfoliated nanosheets of franckeite by quantitative optical microscopy. The analysis of transmission-mode and epi-illumination-mode optical microscopy images provides a rapid method to estimate the thickness of the exfoliated flakes at first glance. A quantitative analysis of the optical contrast spectra by means of micro-reflectance allows one to determine the refractive ...

The van der Waals interaction

The interaction between charged particles via the Coulomb interaction is one of the most important features in physics and is familiar to any student of the subject. The way in which electrons and protons bind to form the hydrogen atom is also well known and is a staple of any quantum mechanics course. However, less familiar is the interaction between such bound systems at separation R, which i...

Dynamic van der Waals theory.

We present a dynamic van der Waals theory starting with entropy and energy functional with gradient contributions. The resultant hydrodynamic equations contain the stress arising from the density gradient. It provides a general scheme of two-phase hydrodynamics involving the gas-liquid transition in nonuniform temperature. Some complex hydrodynamic processes with evaporation and condensation ar...

Non-Analyticity and the van der Waals Limit

We study the analyticity properties of the free energy fγ(m) of the Kac model at points of first order phase transition, in the van der Waals limit γ ↘ 0. We show that there exists an inverse temperature β0 and γ0 > 0 such that for all β ≥ β0 and for all γ ∈ (0, γ0), fγ(m) has no analytic continuation along the path m ↘ m∗ (m∗ denotes spontaneous magnetization). The proof consists in studying h...
